About

BUNSE was established in October 2010, to bring together academics interested in Learning and Teaching in Science to establish a collaborative group amongst universities in the Brisbane area. This group is to be formed with representatives from Queensland University of Technology and other institutions. It is envisaged that this group will be a forum for sharing information and best practice in Learning and Teaching in Science, as well as information about relevant events and conferences, and publishing opportunities.

Aims

Within the context of Science learning and teaching the aims of this group are to:
  • Create a forum for discussion of issues and share strategies in learning and teaching in Science
  • Increase educational communication and collaboration in science learning and teaching between the universities.
  • Promote educational research and community in Science and
  • Enhance the teaching of Science and raise the profile of teaching among our academic colleagues.
It is envisaged that the group will:
  • Establish support networks for academics and students (honours and postgraduates) undertaking research in Science learning and teaching
  • Establish collaboration in inter-university projects:
    • Collaborate to apply for research funding
    • Collaboration with other equivalent interest groups
    • Reduce the perception of competitiveness between universities
  • Increase the profile of scholarly teaching:
    • Increasing dialogue about teaching
    • Boost research into the practice
    • Shifting perceptions of learning and teaching
    • Adding value to and give acknowledgement for scholarly teaching
  • Examine methods of implementation for learning and teaching strategies and policies
    • Examine ways of reaching staff at the ground level
    • Investigate ways to gain support of heads of school, deans, etc.
  • Provide opportunitities to address issues and challenges commonly faced by all academic institutions
  • Host an annual Symposium to address specific Science learning and teaching issues and use the outcomes
    • To develop a resource and/or apply for research funding
  • Examine mechanisms to influence educational policy
  • Create and share resources for the enhancement of Science education.

Meetings

It is proposed that meetings be held at least twice a year, hosted by the participating universities.
